Price out a new or used bike the way the dealer will: tax, fees, trade-in and all. Motorcycle loans usually run shorter than car loans, so compare 24 to 72 months.

Financing a bike without overpaying

Motorcycles depreciate quickly and sit outside the "essential transport" bucket for many lenders, so rates are typically a little higher than for cars. Two habits help: put enough down that you won't owe more than the bike is worth after the first season, and keep the term inside the period you expect to own it.

Gear, extended service contracts and accessories bundled at the dealer are the other trap: a $1,500 package financed over 60 months at 10% costs about $1,910 by the end. Try adding it to the price above to see the difference in your payment.

Questions people ask

How long can you finance a motorcycle?

Most motorcycle loans run 24 to 72 months. Powersports lenders and manufacturer finance arms sometimes offer longer terms on expensive touring bikes, but a shorter term keeps you ahead of depreciation.

Are motorcycle loan rates higher than car loan rates?

Often, yes. A motorcycle is treated as a recreational purchase and is easier to damage or steal, so lenders tend to price it above a comparable car loan. Manufacturer promotions can be the exception.

Can I include gear and accessories in the loan?

Many dealers will roll helmets, gear and extended warranties into the financed amount. Add them to the price field to see what they really cost once interest is included.

Do I pay sales tax on a motorcycle?

In most states, yes, at the same rate as other vehicles. A few states have no general sales tax. Enter 0% if that applies to you.
